Looking for a unique, pleasing, and simple website? Most web designers charge $50-75/hour,
and the total cost for a basic website can cost the customer in the range of $1500-2000… usually more than an artist or any small
business wants to spend. Because I am also a working fine artist, I offer my graphic design services to fellow artists and
small businesses who need websites and/or other graphic design products developed to market their own work at a reasonable fee.
Before leaving my fulltime job in September 2004, I acquired 17 years of experience designing
computer software interfaces and running usability tests on software we designed in-house at Educational Testing
Service in Princeton, NJ. This experience (as well as my degree in graphic design and my own interests in the art
world) provided me with the ability to become proficient with Photoshop and HTML, as well as the ability to make
aesthetically pleasing websites that are also simple, clear, and easy to navigate for the viewers.
No two sites are alike. I don't design from templates. Each customer will be given a unique design that reflects their aesthetics.
Curious how the process works? Have questions? Please see my FAQ here. Or contact me at HollyKnott@HollyKnott.com. (If, for some reason, you cannot reach me
at the above address, try hollykny@yahoo.com.)

Homepage graphics, site navigation design, and one additional page
$450
- Provide the customer with an aesthetically pleasing homepage that reflects the look and feel of their artwork or business by
working closely with them and viewing their art or products in order to get a feel for the style of their work, and the image
that they want to portray. (Customer will be given 3 unique homepage designs to choose from that can be modified. If they
would like to see additional designs, my rate is $30/hour.)
- Design navigation links, such as for their Biography, Statement, and Gallery pages.
- For artists, one gallery page containing up to 9 images of their artwork, that can be displayed first as small thumbnails, that are clickable
and open to larger images. Descriptive text under each image can be included (supplied by the artist). For non-artists, the
equivalent, such as a restaurant with page displaying 9 photographs of the restaurant's interior and exterior.
- Contact information
- Copyright information
- Meta tags for search engine visibility will be included in the HTML of all pages, as well as relevant content on all pages
- Submission of site to a few top search engines, including Google
- Uploading files to their server
- Site will be tested in current versions of Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and Netscape browsers.
Additional pages are "a la carte" at $40 each - the following are examples of what an artist
may want to include. (Small business owners or other potential customers - don't let the "art talk" below confuse you!
Email me for pricing, which will be similar per page to what you see below):
Biography page
$40
- The artist should supply me with biographical text (usually a few paragraphs), although I can offer input on wording if desired.
- This page could include their personal biography, as well as listings of previous shows, exhibits, awards, etc.
- A photo of the artist can be included.
Statement page
$40
- The artist should supply me with their artist’s statement (usually a few paragraphs), although I can
offer input on wording if desired.
Gallery page(s)
Approximately $40 for 1 "gallery thumbnail" page with up to 9-10 images that each open to a page displaying a larger
version of the image with descriptive text
- I can work from large client-supplied .jpgs, or 35mm prints, although I prefer receiving images already in
digital format. Small extra charge for scanning 35mm prints.
- Depending on the amount of artwork the artist would like to display on their site, the gallery section can
range from 1 – x pages. It can be structured so that all artwork fits on one page (this works best with a small
number of images), or it can be divided into multiple pages or categories (i.e., the artist may work in different
mediums or with different subject matter).
- Images can be displayed first as small thumbnails that are clickable and open to larger images. Descriptive text
under each image can be included (supplied by the artist).
Additional pages, sections, etc.
$40/page
- The artist may request additional pages, such as a Links page. If the page is similar to their Biography or Statement
page (just a few paragraphs of text, supplied by the artist), the cost is $40 per page. If the page is similar to their
Gallery page(s) and needs more intensive graphics work, the cost is $30/hour.
Site hosting
- I recommend using LunarPages as a website host. I’ve used them for my
own site for a few years and have had no problems with them, and their customer service is always excellent. Their
basic hosting plan runs $6.95/month, and the artist can also register their domain name with them.
- If the artist already has webspace available via their ISP, we can discuss how to get the files uploaded to that
server. Most likely it would be just a matter of setting me up with a user ID and password so that I can do it,
or I can send the files to the artist on a CD and the artist can upload them if they prefer.
Site updates
$30/hour
- This includes future updates requested by the artist such as text revisions, adding new pieces of artwork, etc.
Other Graphic Design Services:
(Contact me for pricing specifics. My hourly rate is $30.)
I am also available to design business cards, gallery show postcard announcements, sewing pattern covers, etc. Typically
business cards (standard size 2" x 3.5" cards) and double-sided postcards (4" x 6" cards with 4/1 processing) run $75 for the design of each if I've
also designed your website, and $150 if designing from scratch. I'll provide you with a 300dpi high-resolution .tiff file on a CD that you can take to your local
printer or upload to an online printing service, such as SharpDots.com.
One sample of my work can be seen here. I was
asked to redesign the newsletter for Patchwork Plus, a Marcellus, NY quilt
shop. A fun job, and what a great shop. Patchwork Plus has been in the area for 18 years, but if you're in the area, you
HAVE to stop by their brand new custom-built building with plenty of space and fireplace!
